The Earn a Bike program is available to all Cedar Valley residents. Participants can earn a bicycle for free by volunteering 20 hours at the shop, or by volunteering 10 hours and then building their own bike. Individuals with low incomes are encouraged to participate in either of these volunteer programs. This is a great opportunity to learn more about bicycle maintenance and mechanics. All participants who volunteer receive a free helmet and bike lock upon completion.
Another way to earn a bike is our paid option. Paid participants are charged a $50 fee and must also pay for any used parts in the shop. Our mechanic is on duty to provide assistance for all participants building their own bike. Participants may bring in their own parts if they would like.
All participants are expected to complete the program within two months of signing up. A maximum of three Earn a Bike participants are allowed at any time.
Volunteer hours shall be completed in the shop or at special CVBC events such as our Bike Valet at Friday’loo and Irish Fest. Volunteer hours may include activities such as cleaning, organizing parts, inflating tires, etc. Volunteer activities will be based on the participant’s ability. Everybody is encouraged to participate.
To begin the program, visit the shop at our regular hours (Monday and Wednesday 5:00pm to 8:00pm, and Saturday 11:00am to 2:00pm) and speak with the shop mechanic. The mechanic can sign you up, but may be unable to start your program on the same day. You may be asked to begin the program at a later date, likely within a week.
